Planning a wedding starts with a feeling—a season, a story, a mood. And one of the first (and most fun!) decisions you’ll make is choosing your wedding colours. They set the tone for your entire day—from your invitations and flowers to your signage, dresses, and even your cake.
But how do you actually pick the right palette?
At CúanAngel, I’ve helped many couples define their aesthetic through colour. Whether you’re leaning timeless or trendy, bold or soft, here’s how to find the shades that truly reflect your love story.
1. Start with the Season
The time of year can naturally guide your colour choices. Each season offers a unique palette:
- Spring: Soft pastels, sage greens, blush, lavender
- Summer: Vibrant corals, ocean blues, sunflower yellow, citrus tones
- Autumn: Terracotta, rust, burnt orange, forest green
- Winter: Emerald, deep navy, plum, icy silver, champagne
While there are no strict rules, seasonal inspiration often feels most harmonious with your surroundings and light.
2. Look at Your Venue
Take cues from the textures and colours already present in your ceremony and reception spaces. Are you in a rustic barn with warm wood? A modern hotel ballroom with metallic accents? A romantic garden full of greenery?
Your venue can either be a backdrop—or an extension—of your theme. Work with it, not against it.
3. Think About Your Personal Style
Are you more modern minimalism or boho romantic? Classic elegance or bold and artsy?
Look at:
- Your wardrobe: What colours are you naturally drawn to?
- Your home decor: What aesthetic already makes you feel calm and happy?
- Your Pinterest boards (we all have them!): What shades show up over and over?
Your wedding is a reflection of you as a couple—your colours should be too.
4. Choose a Base Colour You Love
Pick one main colour that you truly love—this will be your foundation.
Then build around it:
Add one or two complementary colours
Include a neutral (white, ivory, beige, grey, black)
Optionally add a metallic accent (gold, copper, silver, rose gold)
Example:
- Base: Sage Green
- Compliments: Dusty Rose + Cream
- Metallic: Gold
5. Use a Moodboard to Visualise
This is where the magic happens. A moodboard helps you see how everything works together. At CúanAngel, I create custom moodboards to help couples bring their vision to life—with colour swatches, fonts, textures, and floral styles all on one page.
It’s your colour story at a glance—and it makes designing everything from stationery to décor so much easier.
6. Consider Practical Elements
Keep in mind:
- What colours flatter your bridal party?
- What flowers are in season in your chosen colours?
- Will the colours photograph well in your lighting and venue?
These little details ensure your vision is not only beautiful—but practical too.
